Good to Know

1
Airports and Transfers

San Miguel de Allende is served by 2 international airports, Querétaro and Leon. Each is about a 90-minute drive away from the city center.

For airport transfers, you can book either a private car or shared shuttle from Bajiogo, the most reliable of the many operators. Often, your hotel will also offer to make those arrangements for you, but it will cost more than going direct.

When leaving, be sure your transport is going to the correct airport!

2
Around Town

The city sits above 6000′ elevation and is very hilly in many areas. Know your own capabilities and pace yourself accordingly.

Do not use the ATMs located in the airport. Their fees are extremely high. There are plenty of alternative ATMs in town.

The cobblestone streets of the town center are rough and uneven. Be sure to pack some sturdy walking shoes.

Taxis and Ubers are plentiful and inexpensive.

What to See/ What to Do

San Miguel de Allende has a beautiful and well preserved old town center that should be the start of any visit. Strolling the cobblestone streets, you will see many shops, galleries and restaurants for you to investigate further. At the center of it all is the neo-Gothic Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel, the town’s landmark church. There are also a few museums worth checking out, including the Casa Allende and the Centro Cultural Ignacio Ramirez.

Art Galleries

The city boasts a vibrant and eclectic art scene, its charming cobblestone streets adorned with numerous galleries showcasing a diverse array of contemporary and traditional Mexican art. The city’s rich cultural heritage, coupled with a thriving community of local and international artists, creates a dynamic atmosphere that continually attracts art enthusiasts and fosters a creative hub in this picturesque Mexican town. Among the many art galleries, here are a few of our favorites:

The surrounding area

While the city is beautiful, it is worth getting out of town to see the environs and meet the local people. Leisurely Country Horseback Riding offers 2 ½ hour rides on nice horses with local vaqueros (cowboys) through the Ejido Boca de la Cañada.

You can also add on a soak in the local hot springs at the end of your ride.
