San Miguel de Allende has a beautiful and well preserved old town center that should be the start of any visit. Strolling the cobblestone streets, you will see many shops, galleries and restaurants for you to investigate further. At the center of it all is the neo-Gothic Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel, the town’s landmark church. There are also a few museums worth checking out, including the Casa Allende and the Centro Cultural Ignacio Ramirez.
Art Galleries
The city boasts a vibrant and eclectic art scene, its charming cobblestone streets adorned with numerous galleries showcasing a diverse array of contemporary and traditional Mexican art. The city’s rich cultural heritage, coupled with a thriving community of local and international artists, creates a dynamic atmosphere that continually attracts art enthusiasts and fosters a creative hub in this picturesque Mexican town. Among the many art galleries, here are a few of our favorites:
Fábrica la Aurora – This former textile factory is home to many stores showcasing high end art, furniture, clothing, jewelry and more. People come here to furnish their homes and for art workshops. It is a short walk/uber from town.
Exim Galeria – Showcases many different styles. It is one of the most affordable on the list.
Ted Davis Galeria – Ted’s photographs capture the beauty and spirit of San Miguel de Allende.
San Francisco – Several rooms with rotating exhibits encircling a courtyard where concerts are often held.
Arde Gallery – home to many beautiful pieces.
Arroyo Gallery – Gallery of nice large abstract florals.
Tao Studio Gallery – Gallery of unique furniture, jewelry and purses. They are designed in Spain and made locally.
Galeria Casa Diana – high end gallery that represents several artists.
Photographic Gallery SMA – small gallery focusing on photographs that use unique development processes.
Namuh – Very interesting furniture store.
The surrounding area
While the city is beautiful, it is worth getting out of town to see the environs and meet the local people. Leisurely Country Horseback Riding offers 2 ½ hour rides on nice horses with local vaqueros (cowboys) through the Ejido Boca de la Cañada.
You can also add on a soak in the local hot springs at the end of your ride.
