The country of Malta is actually 3 islands. Malta, the main island, Gozo to the Northwest, and Comino, a small, uninhabited island in between. There are frequent ferries to shuttle you around between islands and to the tourist spots.
The shoreline is mostly rocky, with very few actual beaches. Nevertheless, many of these rocky coves are popular sunbathing spots. There are also several spots, such as the Blue Grotto and Blue Lagoon, that are popular destinations for day tripper boats.
We had expected to spend a good amount of our time in Malta exploring it by boat. Unfortunately, the crazy spring weather that affected us in Tunisia also impacted Malta and we were landbound during our week there.
Beyond the capital city of Valletta, The islands’ countryside has a lot to offer as well. Mdina, a medieval hilltop fortress town, was the capital of Malta for centuries before Valletta was built. If the narrow streets and fortress walls look familiar, it’s because the first season of Game of Thrones was filmed here.
Marsaxlokk is a very picturesque fishing village on the south coast. With its colorful fleet of fishing boats, it is a treat for photographers. The town’s waterfront also features a daily central market and numerous seafood restaurants.
One restauranteur here boasted “I don’t serve the day’s freshest seafood, but the hour’s freshest”!
